Like with many other characters, if you play him correctly people aren't going to like your style. Unless you're fine with playing keep-away waiting for them to mess up, it'll be better for you to play someone else.
I find people get more annoyed when their opponent does the same thing every time in a particular situation. The problem for sonic is his two best punish tools look very similar. Look into sonic mixups and lesser known strings?

This is true, but its also silly, if you keep falling for or losing to the same thing over and over, thats on you.
If someone is getting mad at you for doing the same thing let them get mad, they are probably getting frustrated at themselves more than anything for failing to counter what they can see coming, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I like it when people do the same thing over and over, it makes games very easy :)

Jezmo and Aero told me they don't hate my Sonic (a compliment I hold dear!), so there's def a way to play him without being annoying. I would recommend watching any video of 6WX playing, and you should be good to go. IMO, the annoying methods are used by people transitioning from beginner to intermediate, at which point they will face off against players patient enough to just block and punish. I don't think any of the "annoying" ways are the best ways to play Sonic, but I think all Sonic players go through it.
I find that Sonic can be played in a variety of ways, and, for some characters, has to adjust and play completely differently (e.g., if you exclusively spin dash during neutral, Wario is not your friend).

Sonic is just one of those characters that force you to play a different style than you're used to. This is why people dislike fighting characters like little mac and rosa as well. Sonic forces you to play really defensive and only rely on punishes (he doesn't have many either).
