That's a crew battle.... 4v4s are squaddles. What they mean is 4v4 meaning 4 people in a team 1v1ing turn by turn
So a team of 6 people with 4 stocks each comes to 24 stocks (duh), and the team leader can decide who they each send in for the 1v1's.
Pooled stocks are 1v1's of all the players instead of 4v4's. Each player has 4 stocks and they get pooled together with the team.

picks a character, then the loser picks a character. It's pretty simple when you get it down like that.
The winner of the first match bans however many stages they're allowed to ban, then the loser picks a counterpick, then the winner

First match, characters are blind picked using a 3rd party, then rock, paper scissors to decide who bans a neutral first.

picking the stage first gives a lot of information about what character your opponent is likely to pick.
@pazx because that's how it's been for a long time and I do my best to avoid changing rules that allow for a good neutral game.

It's like it's this long forgotten rule that is only remembered by the people who have been in the competitive scene long enough.
You dont get to change character if you pick stage first THEN character.
But counter picks are in place to benefit the person counter picking so if you get to change character doesn't that defeat the whole point?

Doing it the other way around may lead you to unknowingly counterpicking against yourself.
Characters before stage allows for strategic stage selection with the information available. Much more preferable tbh
