There might finally be a good reason to leave Tap Jump on aside from player preference. Inputs are very easy, but may require changing your habits with the controller.
Note that this can also be done with tap jump off by setting jump to the Z button, but requires a claw hold.

I've been doing that for years ;_;

Seeing as I don't use it for shield, I am going to try binding L to jump. Will hopefully help with frame perfect ariels and JC Up-B (which is really hard on GC controllers!) It's going to be so hard to get used to that, though, and being on a trigger just might prove to be too slow.

I used to have the R button to attack so DACUS was easier in Brawl.
I can't see myself ever changing L to anything but shield/airdodge, thanks Melee and PM!

Hey guys, I go to /r/crazyhand sometimes to try and help other players (keyword: try). I wrote a response to a guy who typed up 1 paragraph parts for character specific advice for the "neutral":
https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyHand/comments/3czeif/a_guide_of_the_neutral_game_leave_suggestions/ct0kbu9
I'm looking for input from the more experienced members of this site on whether I got the general gist of things, or you know, if I'm just talking out of my ass LOL. I'm the first to admit that I still don't know a whole lot about the game, but at least I know that I don't know (if that makes sense). Hopefully people can correct me on this matter.
It just irks me that people think that the neutral is a simple concept that you can just automatically win by following a few bullet points. Heck, it irks me that the word "neutral" has almost achieved buzzword status.

Is is worth learning to use your aerials with the c stick?

If your C-stick is set to Attack, yes. It's the best way to execute retreating aerials.

Wii U: NoticeMeKohai
is it true that aerials with the c-stick set to smash halt/stall your aerial momentum?

If the C-stick is set to smash, you can't use the control stick to control your aerial drift at the same time you're inputting an aerial with the C-stick (e.g. you can't do retreating Fairs with Marth)

So only while the c-stick is sending an input?
Which means you technically can do a retreating fair, but you won't be moving for part of it?

Yes, so you can still do a retreating fair with a Smash C-stick, but you won't go as far as when you do it with an Attack C-stick. You get better control of your aerial drift with the Attack C-stick.
Another advantage of the Attack C-stick is that you can control your aerial drift while doing rising aerials, which is important for some characters as they can hit short characters with a SH aerial.

You mentioned "Playing to win" that's good enough :D (Inb4 DD isn't experienced :D)
I also like referring smash players to this old gem: http://sonichurricane.com/?page_id=1702
While not all parts apply to smash the fundamental concepts do and it's worth a read if you want to learn and understand more about footsies

Yo DD, that website is an absolute goldmine and now I'm reading through it and digesting it thoroughly. Thanks for coming through homie :D
I'm pretty sure with your experience in several FGs and Smash, you're more than qualified to be called an experienced player :P

Play games where you try to limit your damage taken rather than dealing damage. The safer you learn to play, the better you'll get at the game. Avoid putting yourself into situations where you can be punished. Think about what moves, movements and actions will put you into lag or disadvantageous situations and start trying to avoid them.
Don't try learning difficult tech skills until you learn fundamentals. A player with fundamentals and no tech will always beat a player without fundamentals and only techs. Far too often you'll see a player who can do character tricks etc, but can't space, zone or optimally punish.
Learn your options out of shield. One thing I never see new players do is just grab punish attacks on shield. Grab out of shield is such an incredible tool, and newcomers just never seem to do it.
Which leads to the fourth basic point that incorporates all 3 of the above. Don't attack shields haphazardly or with unsafe moves. Space your attacks so that your opponent can't retaliate. Know what options you have that can safely hit shield without being punished. Simple things like if you're coming down from above someone and are going to attack the shield, aim to connect behind the way they are facing, and hit the outer edge of the shield as you move past them. Watch your games back versus good players and count how many times you get punished for attacking shields poorly.
Lastly, don't listen to Lachlan.

You can't really no. However if you play Mac it's worth learning foxtrot cancelled fsmashes. Which you can turn around and do.
Otherwise a perfect pivot might do the job.
If you wait for the dash animation to end you could always just fsmash whichever direction as well
