Aerodrome's Guidance - Smash Tutoring from Beginner to Intermediate Levels!

  3. Aerodrome's Guidance - Smash Tutoring from Beginner to Intermediate Levels!
I've been thinking about doing something like this for a while. Basically what I'm offering is a way for newcomers to the competitive scene to learn the ins and outs of their respective characters and Smash 4 in general.

For the moment I'm focusing mostly on newer players, to help them with:

- Basic to intermediate gameplay advice
- Basic character specific advice

Although this is directed at newer players, more experienced players are more than welcome to play with me, although I think there will be less of a chance that I will be either willing or even able to point out holes in your gameplay.

So basically how this works is that you tell me who you main, and we organize a time to play some Wi-Fi. If you play a character I can play effectively, then I will play that character against you if you want, to which I highly recommend that you save replays and watch how I play the character and pick tips up from that.

After the Wi-Fi session, I'll let you know of the biggest flaws in your gameplay that I saw for you to work on. Fixing these will improve your gameplay immensely.

So, let's go!

There's at least 2 or 3 things you can probably work on:

1) Ledge options - Your ledge game is poor. You only ever use drop down > fair > regrab or stand up, which neither is "wrong" but it's the only thing you ever do. You almost got Falcon Punched because of it. You need to mix up your ledge options or you WILL die. Some characters like Captain Falcon have very powerful spike or semi spike options and if they catch you on the ledge without invincibility then you will lose a stock.

2) Committing to random moves half a stage away - This is one thing I noticed you do. Often you'll just down air as Peach for no conceivable reason halfway across the stage. Committing is fine against some characters who can't close the gap, but if you're just down air'ing randomly then you'll get punished for it by things like Falcon fsmash.

3) Controlling space - As Peach you have a number of strong zone control tools. I don't think I once saw you toss a turnip upwards. I know this isn't Brawl or Melee where turnips were absurd, but I think you could be using them a bit better rather than just haphazardly throwing them at me. I generally just picked them up and threw them back.

Also man you gotta stop floating into random forward smashes and SD'ing.

GGs. Thanks for your time. Also, thanks for the tips. Sometimes I seem to be doing things on autopilot, or just playing with bad habits. What would be the best way to practice to reduce/remove these?
As an aside, can you teach me the fox MU some other time? Thats something that I need to work on.

Everyone autopilots at some stage. It's a good habit to get rid of, but I do it way to often myself so I don't really have any advice on how to stop doing it. I suppose recognising your bad habits and then reminding yourself not to do it is the best way to stop but that's easier said than done. Plus, removing a bad habit will often have another one replace it, so you have to always be on guard.

My Fox is atrocious and I lose to Foxs anyway, so I don't think I'm the best person for that lol.

Do you live in Sydney deepblue? A good way to remove bad habits is playing with good players often, there are constantly meets and tourneys in Sydney.
Theres probably going to be a meet at the UTS this weekend in the evening (either sat, sun or both) that I'll most likely be at, if you can make it along I'll set aside some time to play with you and help you learn the fox match up.

I would but I'm gonna cap my net over the next like, day for a week, so I'm not going to be able to play wifi on the Wii U (for Smash anyway).

I think you'll find thats a space ship.

And ok neato. I've ordered a GC controller from amazon, so hopefully it will be here by then. I used my friends and im like 70% used to it. The god damn A,B,X,Y buttons are so different though, I had to map A to jump because that made the most sense to me.

.......... please don't map A to jump

I honestly need to probably start playing with tap jump. Maybe I'll get a new controller binding and learn it offline over the next week or so

I get judged by people for only using tap jump so if anyone wants tips on learning how to tap jump, I'm probably your man.

you get judged for using Yoshi with tap jump

Tap jump makes OoS options easier but it does make characters like Mario, Yoshi and anyone dependent on utilt/uair/up special impossible to use effectively.

A is like the centre button so me feels like its good to have in the middle or something. I don't know. What do people usually press to jump? And why would you prefer to have tap jump?

I personally hate the layout of the gcc, but at smash box i was getting a lot of interference between my wiimote and the wii(i use the classic controller pro usually). Something people had always warned me about but i didn't realise was true until I found all my inputs came out as smash attacks. I don't think it was from other wii motes but more from peoples mobile phones, because when i played the 3ds one at uni with friends, if one of us got a text or something with the phones it our pockets, the game would disconnect.

i

It's only hard if you don't practice it. I'm perfectly capable of up tilting without flying around the stage like a crazed grasshopper.

I use X to jump and Y to grab. You'll find most have similar setups.

If you really want A as jump though, I won't stop you.

Out of Shield.

You can cancel your shield with a jump, and during your jumpsquat animation (the frames before you're airborne) you can input a up special or up smash.

my only problem is i feel like some characters up B's are better if you still have momentum from your jump, like me thinks DK works that way, but he may not. And Its hard on the gamecube controller since the X and B buttons are practically in different rooms.

But everyone else can do it, im just dumb.

GiRL i bind jump to L for that reason , i use it when want to do OoS things because you are right it is uncomfortable to do it with default.

Nah, I remember it took me like, 2 weeks to get used to GCN controls coming from Wiimote and Nunchaku, so don't worry about it too much.
